In these times of economic hardship, junk food, mass production, advertising overload and increasingly shallow or virtual interactions with others, public artwork, especially done with skill and soul, can serve as a hearty serving of inspiration and reality. I am putting a little piece of my soul out there.

Man, I forgot how awesome it feels to draw things that are taller than me.

Kate MccGwire, whom we currently feature in Volume 21, will be showing two new works this winter at Maison Rouge in Paris. These new sculptural pieces, entitled Quell and Lure, both showcase MccGwires trademark feather covered sculptures that express both a sensuous flow as well as a constricted tension. - the-blog/1859-kate-mccgwire-in-paris.htmlhttp://hifructose.com/

Operation Wheat Paste: Tagging with Substance.

A couple weeks ago I was replenishing my supplies at Hyatt’s, when I observed a few young men purchasing some pretty vibrant shades in aerosol form in front of me. Being a hopeless romantic, my heart somersaulted at the creative possibilities. Much to my disappointment, I soon witnessed them foolishly scribbling (their actions are not worthy of being labeled as ‘tagging’) on every building they passed.

I’ve always been an advocate for street art, but I’ve always been an observer. I’m the last person who will tell you not to draw on a wall. Mindless vandalism, however, is on the other side of the spectrum for me. So instead of continuing to watch and get angry, I’ve decided to lead by example.

Step one: I’m going to master every form of street art I possibly can.

Step two: Find a way to convert at least a handful of urban Picassos into putting some thought into their message before they crack open that Krylon. I don’t imagine the school down the street is going to let me speak to their students about yarn tagging, so I’m going to have to brainstorm some alternative means of reaching out.

Since I’m not confident in my spray can abilities, I’m going to start with some simple wheat pasting. I like the idea of more transient art forms, anyways.  I might even attempt to only paint with permission, which might be a challenge.

Did some location scouting today. I think I may have found my first building, but I’m gonna look around some more. You might want to keep your eyes peeled on Grant St. in about 30 days..

Rules:

1. Vacant buldings only.

2. Choose spaces with a high ‘youth’ foot traffic and clear visibility.

3. Paste only thought or dream provoking images.

4. All art must be hand drawn.

5. Choose neighborhoods that will benefit aesthetically and otherwise from public art.

6. Try not to get into trouble.

7  Don’t sweat it if you do.

Thoughts/ideas are welcomed and encouraged.

Love.
